The Goodbye

When does a child learn?
That what was seen is after what was before,
A before begone too fast to know,
Leaving us to wonder why,
The necessity of this Goodbye.

There is that one moment of surprise,
One that never fails when it arrives,
Oh! Is it also your time to go?
Oh…
Why?
Stay a little longer why don’t you?
Or no…
I don’t know…

This moment bears my deepest empathy,
For all of us who cannot detach desire,
Forced to gauge reason with feeling,
Our attachment lies only with suffering.
A suffering we ease by saying that word,
Leaving us alone to wonder why.

How many people will I never see again?
What number of things have passed in my life?
Which part of me is even remaining?
To ask
Where the past has gone?
Who am I anymore?
I only weep and cry…

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
Do I have to say the Goodbye?
